Structural Editing
(also known as substantive editing)
As the name suggests – this edit works through the structure of the document. A structural edit will iron out the kinks allowing the document to be structurally sound and the content relevant.
This includes:
- Accurate heading hierarchy
- Well flowing sequential order
- Non repetitive or rambling content
- Consistency of style and tone
- Use of plain English (rather than technical or highbrow)
- Appropriate content and language for the intended purpose and audience
This is a broad edit, and an overall look at the structure of the document. It is undertaken after a rough draft has been created and prior to an author investing too much time working on something that may need to be rewritten. A structural edit analyses the structure and content to see if the writing is structurally sound and the content suits the purpose of the document.
Plain English provides clear, direct and simple language to allow the reader to understand the content. Don’t worry technical and big words can still be used!
Structural editing is not a detailed breakdown of the document ie sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, checking spelling grammar and punctuation – for this edit go to our copyediting service.
